Verena Guther

NY XXXVI, 2010, 50 × 150 cm

»Verena Guther explores a city through its lineage, its specific repertoire of shapes and colors, constantly recombining them according to aesthetic principles.

The marginalization of humans amidst the metropolitan web is reflected in the image constructs in both the New York and Shanghai series. The artist shows people in relation to the surroundings they have created.

Man is the only entity still perceptible amidst the mass in the face of the density of enclosing architecture: stacked in rows by the inked band or as a floating moving band (New York) or even as a military staffage of dictatorial posturing (Shanghai).«
